Kimberley Vandenhole is a PhD student at the Research Centre for Socio-Environmental Dynamics (SONYA) at the Free University of Brussels and at the Centre for Sustainable Development at Ghent University. Interested in environmental policy and philosophy, she holds a master's degree in political science (UGent) and a master's degree in environmental science (ULB). She studies environmental issues through socio-political approaches. Her thesis focuses on environmental discourses, in particular the discourse of eco-shaming. In the 1910s, Srinivasa Ramanujan is a man of boundless intelligence that even the abject poverty of his home in Madras, India, cannot crush. Eventually, his stellar intelligence in mathematics and his boundless confidence in both attract the attention of the noted British mathematics professor, G.H. Hardy, who invites him to further develop his computations at Trinity College at Cambridge. During the bachelor's degree, I had the opportunity to acquire versatile scientific knowledge through the wide range of subjects taught in chemistry, biology, mathematics and physics. During these three years, I developed a growing interest in molecular biology and numerical analysis. I therefore decided to pursue the Master of Bioengineering in Chemistry and Bioindustries, where I was able to deepen my knowledge and discover exciting fields such as modelling and control applied to biological systems (my thesis), applied statistics and bioinformatics. I am currently in my final year of my master's degree. The elucidation of the neurophysiological basis of high-level cognitive functions in children has been the driving force behind my scientific interests over the past 15 years. My research challenges are twofold: 1. to develop age-appropriate electrophysiological or neuroimaging tasks to assess complex cognitive abilities often atypical in neurodevelopmental disorders. 2. to identify the neurophysiological basis and mechanisms associated with these cognitive functions in typically and atypically developing children. My research group focuses on the relationship between (i) brain oscillations occurring during wakefulness (theta and alpha synchronization processes) and sleep (slow wave sleep) and (ii) brain activity and/or connectivity processes underlying learning, emotional regulation and executive function processes in children. Hi, I'm Olga and I'm a biologist ! I studied at ULB in biology, with an option "tropical botany" in master. I had the chance to go to Malaysia for a semester where I studied the genetics of a mangrove species for my thesis. Back in Belgium, I started a complementary master's degree at the VUB in Human Ecology, which aims to form links between scientists and decision-makers (politicians, lobbies, NGOs etc.). I also wanted to work closer to home to be in line with my ecological convictions. So I started studying invasive species in aquatic environments (primrose willows), first for a dissertation and then as part of a doctoral thesis. For me, being a biologist means being able to visualise the complex interrelationships between each component of our world, and to see the beauty that lies behind what we do not understand.

Synopsis:

This undivided domination has intrigued scientists for centuries. According to Charles Darwin, "the rapid development of flowering plants is an abominable mystery". Today, a new generation of scientists is trying to unravel this mystery. Palaeontologists, biologists and geneticists are tracking down the slightest clue all over the world. From the African deserts to the forests of New Caledonia, via the summits of the Alps, they are making astonishing discoveries. Flowers have unbridled sexuality, possess massive weapons of seduction and are more resistant than dinosaurs! What are the superpowers that make them unbeatable? Synopsis:

Scientists now believe they have a more accurate picture of dinosaurs. Newly discovered fossils reveal more details about their behaviour and characteristics. Plumage appears to be a widespread trait among dinosaurs and would have facilitated adaptation in extreme climates, as far away as the Arctic. Furthermore, the discovery of a fossilised nest allows us to deduce that these animals incubated their eggs and took care of their young. At the same time, the oceans were inhabited by sea monsters, reptilians, which in their evolution would have escaped the dinosaurs. This film shows the survival tactics of these mysterious giants, particularly off the coast of Japan. This is a striking image, far from the world of Jurassic Park!

During the whole week of the Festival, the public will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite photo.
